Amplifiers
The amplifier used within subtractive synthesis shapes the volume of the sound, making it soft or hard, slow or short. An amplifier in this context is often known as a VCA - Voltage Controlled Amplifier. Essentially this is a volume control but it is quite common to see ADSR controls which usually belong in the Envelope area of a synthesizer.
